"The Haunted Samurai" plunges viewers into the rigid Bakumatsu era, where Bessho Hikoshiro, an intelligent but low-ranking warrior, battles the suffocating caste system. A chance encounter with his former class rival, Enomoto Takeaki, now a respected naval commander, highlights Hikoshiro's own stagnant existence. A kind noodle shop owner reveals Enomoto's dramatic social ascent followed a mysterious prayer at a Mukojima shrine. As Hikoshiro contemplates this unusual path to power, a creeping sense of the supernatural begins to haunt his thoughts, suggesting that true advancement might demand a spectral bargain or unleash unforeseen consequences in his desperate quest to reclaim his honor and family.
