In the late 1990s, siblings Cheng Miao Miao and Cheng Ya Ya, born into a family of multi-generational oilfield workers, move from the northwest to the tranquil seaside Heping Town. Seventeen-year-old Miao Miao, yearning for adventure beyond her hometown, plans an ambitious summer trip to Hong Kong with her childhood sweetheart and best friend, but her elaborate scheme ultimately fails. Concurrently, her younger brother, Ya Ya, embarks on an archaeological quest in the back mountains, almost getting mistaken for a tomb robber.

As their mother grapples with constant worry, the siblings plunge into a chaotic yet transformative high school life. Miao Miao finds herself navigating a painful friendship crisis, while Ya Ya faces a different kind of challenge. A new transfer student, the daughter of a wanted criminal, arrives in Ya Ya's class, immediately becoming an outcast. Ya Ya bravely steps forward, standing against the widespread hostility to defend her. "Wind Direction" chronicles these pivotal moments of change, capturing the siblings' personal growth as they confront adolescent struggles, family dynamics, and societal prejudices.
