The Long Way Back thrusts viewers into the harsh winter of 1937, when the Japanese Kwantung Army’s Three Rivers Crusade against the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army plunged the resistance into its most desperate phase. By autumn 1938, a brutal battle leaves a small team decimated. Platoon leader Old Shandong forges a solemn pact with his surviving men: survivors will meet at the eight pines outside Songlin Town Mudanjiang, carving their numbers to signal their return. This agreement ignites an epic, life-and-death journey for Old Shandong and five other anti-Japanese fighters, determined to regroup and rejoin their comrades. Along their arduous path, they face separation, loss, and betrayal, while some even join the 88th International Brigade, gaining new skills. Finally, in 1945, on the eve of the Anti-Japanese War's victory, three of these veteran soldiers return to the Northeast with a crucial secret mission. They must inspire wavering comrades, reunite the fragmented team, and together, complete one perilous final task to secure their nation's freedom.
