In the martial arts drama The Grandmaster, the lives of two legendary kung fu masters intertwine. Ip Man, the future trainer of Bruce Lee, represents the south of China, while Gong Er comes from the north. Their paths cross in his hometown of Foshan in 1936, on the eve of the Japanese invasion. As China faces turmoil and the south teeters on the brink of partition from the north, destiny brings them together. Gong Er's father, a renowned grandmaster, also travels to Foshan. The legendary brothel, The Golden Pavilion, where the country's best martial artists converge, is chosen as the venue for his retirement ceremony. This setting becomes the backdrop for an epic story of honor and legacy.
