Set in 1944, the historical drama Oba The Last Samurai depicts the intense struggle when the American military lands on the shores of Saipan. Refusing to commit suicide with his superiors or face the humiliation of prisoner of war camps, Captain Oba Sakae, played by Takenouchi Yutaka, chooses to fight on. He leads a loyal group of his men and like-minded local residents deep into the safety of the mountains. Even when official reports of the Japanese military surrender surface, Oba dismisses them as mere American propaganda and continues to launch daring guerrilla attacks. His cunning tactics soon earn him the nickname The Fox. As the conflict drags on, the American commander charged with capturing Oba finds himself growing to deeply admire his persistent and honorable enemy.
