Youth in the War follows the journey of Zhang Peiran, a wealthy Shanghai youth, who embarks on a dangerous path fueled by his love for classmate Tong Hui. To win her affection, he bravely participates in an assassination operation planned by Tong Hui and facilitated by Zhou Jianfeng, a liaison for the Eighth Route Army. This perilous endeavor forces Zhang Peiran and Tong Hui to escape the city, finding refuge in the challenging Liberated Area. There, Zhang Peiran's character sharply contrasts with Zhou Jianfeng, a veteran reconnaissance commander, who soon captures Tong Hui's heart. Deeply affected by the harsh new environment and the heartbreak of unrequited love, Zhang Peiran falls into a profound depression. Overwhelmed by personal and external struggles, he contemplates quietly abandoning the Liberated Territories, questioning his purpose amidst the war.
