Young Babylon offers a compelling look at 1990s China through the eyes of Lu Xiao Lu, a headstrong young man from a working-class background. At nineteen, he reluctantly accepts a job at his town’s saccharin factory, a path society expects him to follow. Initially struggling with the bureaucratic routine, Lu Xiao Lu gradually adjusts. He finds camaraderie with his coworkers, flirts with girls, and subtly resists fully conforming to expectations. As he observes China's rapid economic expansion, Lu Xiao Lu becomes disillusioned, seeing how the propaganda of shared goals gives way to a bottom-line system that neglects individual happiness. Ultimately, bolstered by the strong relationships he forms, he resolves to fight for the life he truly wants, portraying a generation's struggle for identity amidst societal change.
