In the midst of a severe drought in Taipei, the government recommends eating watermelons for hydration. Against this bizarre backdrop, two alienated souls cross paths. Shiangchyi, a museum tour guide who wanders the city hoarding bottles of water, enters into a strange relationship with Hsiaokang. Unbeknownst to her, Hsiaokang works as an actor in low-budget porn films. As their lives intertwine, the watermelon becomes a perverse and symbolic motif. Director Tsai Mingliang explores sex, bodies, and profound loneliness, blending campy musical numbers with raw sex scenes to create a bizarre existential chaos. Trapped in their isolation, these characters drift like wayward clouds through life without purpose in a world without water. This emotionally tortured yet funny masterpiece culminates in an unbelievable final scene that manages to be both weirdly erotic and profoundly disturbing.
