Set in 19th-century Unasaka Province of Yamagata, The Twilight Samurai is a poignant drama about Seibei Iguchi, a low-ranking widowed samurai. Mocked by colleagues as the twilight samurai, Seibei leads a modest life working as a bureaucrat and making cages at night to support his senile mother and two young daughters, Ito and Kayano. Deep in debt, Seibei struggles to survive on a meager income. Hope flickers when his childhood love, Tomoe Iinuma, returns after divorcing her abusive husband, Toyotarou Kouda. Despite their deep connection, Seibei believes their massive social class difference makes a future together impossible. However, when Kouda challenges Tomoe’s brother, Michinojo Iinuma, to a duel, Seibei steps in to protect the family. To defend the woman he loves, this humble bureaucrat must once again draw his sword and rely on his hidden skills as a master swordsman in a changing feudal Japan.
