In reality, Shintaro is Matsudaira Nobuchiyo, the older half-brother of the young 11th Tokugawa shogun, Tokugawa Ienari. Because he is the son of a concubine, Nobuchiyo has no claim to power. Instead, he assumes the guise of a wandering swordsman to secretly investigate and eliminate sinister plots hatched by rival feudal lords who seek to overthrow his minor brother. In this action-packed season, Shintaro and Tombei must use all of their skills to battle the deadly enemies of the Shogun, including the dreaded Iga, Koga, and Fuma ninjas.
