Description:

The Red Phallus delves into the challenging life of Sangai, a teenage girl residing in an inland Bhutanese village. She harbors deep dissatisfaction with her father, a man who crafts wooden phalluses believed to possess mysterious power and performs as a festival clown adorned with a striking red mask. Sangai reluctantly carries out the task of delivering these phalluses to neighbors, an errand that turns terrifying when she finds herself pursued through the hills by dozens of men in red masks and costumes. This unsettling incident intensifies the already growing conflict and tension between Sangai and her father. He is increasingly preoccupied with finding a successor for his unique tradition, while Sangai navigates a clandestine relationship with a married man, further complicating her personal desires against the backdrop of village life and cultural expectations.
