The Red Army is a gripping drama that explores the dark descent of political radicalism. As the student-led antiauthority struggles of the New Left fade after their late 1960s peak, a small faction of radical fighters refuses to back down. Desperate to spark a revolution by force, they raid a police box and a gun shop to seize firearms, forming the militant United Red Army. Fleeing into the freezing, snowcovered mountains to evade the authorities, the group quickly unravels from within. Paranoia takes over, leading to brutal beatings and tragic deaths of members accused of lacking revolutionary conscience. Ultimately, the survivors are pushed to the brink. Five remaining members barricade themselves inside the Asama lodge in Nagano prefecture, setting the stage for a tense and violent gun battle against police and riot police in a desperate final stand.
