Set in Shanxi during the early Republican era, The Mother Said is a gripping family drama revolving around the wealthy Long family. The story follows Ying Niang, also known as Ying Gu, a young mistress struggling to survive in a harsh world. After giving birth to three daughters, Ying Gu and her husband Long Ji Zong are forced to move out to protect their third daughter, who is labeled a bringer of misfortune. Tragedy strikes when Xu Zhi dies, leaving a pregnant Ying Gu alone. Rejected by both her mother-in-law and her own family, she is forced to marry an opium addict who sells her third daughter for drugs. In a fit of rage, Ying Gu sets a fire and is imprisoned, where she gives birth to her son. After her release, despite help from her husband's twin, Long Yan Zong, chaos separates Ying Gu from her children, sparking an arduous journey to reunite her family.
