"The Legend of Shaolin Temple" introduces Ximen Debao, an innkeeper whose biggest ambition is simply to keep his establishment afloat amidst dwindling clientele. To attract much-needed business, Debao cooks up an unconventional, if ethically dubious, scheme. He enlists his younger brother, Tu Hao, and their friends to disguise themselves as fearsome bandits, ambushing unsuspecting travelers on nearby roads.

At the precise, pre-arranged critical moments of these fake robberies, Debao dramatically swoops in. Posing as a mysterious, highly skilled martial artist with ties to the legendary Shaolin Temple, he effortlessly "subdues" the staged ruffians. The grateful, relieved travelers, often shaken but safe, are then naturally led to seek refuge and refreshment at the nearest inn – which, of course, is Debao's. This ingenious charade brings a steady stream of patrons, but maintaining the elaborate deception soon proves to be a comedic, yet perilous, balancing act.
