The King and the Clown (2005)

Description:

Set during the height of the 16th-century Chosun Dynasty, the movie The King and the Clown follows two rural male actors: the boisterous, macho Jang Seng and the quiet, feminine Gong Gil. After traveling to Seoul, they join a struggling acting troupe and perform an irreverent, bawdy show that mocks the famously hedonistic king. This daring performance leads to their prompt arrest. However, they are given one chance to save themselves: they must make the king laugh. To everyone's surprise, the ecstatic monarch loves the show and names them official court jesters, offering them lavish food and shelter. But the king's intense attentiveness to Gong Gil soon reveals that humor is not his only motivation. As suspicion grows, intense jealousy and anger spring from all sides, including the king's mistress, the country's ministers, and even Jang Seng himself, turning their dream into a deadly palace nightmare.
