The story follows a mysterious magician named Zhang Xian, played by Tony Leung, who arrives in a town governed by General Lei Daniu, played by Lau Ching Wan. Desperate to win the affections of his seventh concubine Liu Yin, played by Zhou Xun, General Lei arranges a private performance at the theater where Zhang Xian is performing. Unbeknownst to General Lei, Zhang Xian is actually Liu Yin’s long-lost fiancé who left for overseas studies many years ago. Now, the master illusionist has finally returned to rescue her.
