The historical drama The Founding of a Republic chronicles the turbulent power struggle in China following the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1945. Mao Zedong and the Chinese Communist Party CCP travel to Chongqing to negotiate with Chiang Kai-shek and the Kuomintang KMT. Although they sign the Double Tenth Agreement to establish a multiparty government, peace is short-lived. Chiang Kai-shek is elected President of the Republic of China ROC in Nanjing, negotiations collapse, and the civil war resumes. Key political figures like Zhang Lan, Soong Ching-ling, and Li Jishen support the CCP from non-battleground areas like Shanghai and Hong Kong. By May 1948, the CCP initiates the War of Liberation. As the Red Army secures victories against the NRA, Chiang and his forces eventually retreat to Taiwan in December 1949. Ultimately, on 1 October 1949, Mao Zedong proclaims the Peoples Republic, marking a monumental shift in history.
