Description:

The End of Summer, directed by Japanese master director Yasujiro Ozu, is a poignant drama exploring the generational clash within the Kohayagawa family. Set in a rapidly changing postwar Japan, the family struggles to preserve their traditional values as their generations-old sake making business faces imminent failure due to fierce competition. At the center of the conflict is Manbei, the incorrigible elderly patriarch. Instead of focusing on the failing family business, Manbei distracts himself by rekindling an affair with an old flame, sparking deep disapproval from his daughter Fumiko. Meanwhile, Manbei tries to secure his family's future by arranging marriages for his other two daughters. He attempts to find matches for Akiko, his eldest daughter who is a widow with a small son, and Noriko, his youngest daughter who remains single. Through delicate storytelling, the film beautifully captures a family navigating the painful transition between ancient traditions and modern life.
