Description:

The Cloud in Her Room introduces 22-year-old Mu Zi as she returns to her birthplace for the New Year celebration. She repeatedly wanders through her parents' old apartment, a static space representing a past relationship and a life that has moved on. Her father has started a new family, and her mother lives abroad, leaving Mu Zi as the apparent sole caretaker of these fading memories. During her visit, Mu Zi arranges meetings with old friends, forges some new connections, and sees her parents. Yet, she consistently feels out of step, caught in a personal limbo between past and future, mirroring the abandoned apartment itself. Shot in black and white, this debut film masterfully uses varied camerawork to underline Mu Zi’s profound alienation. It’s a melancholy yet universal story about love, the impermanence of relationships, and the inherent loneliness these experiences can bring.
