The psychological thriller The Chrysalis begins on Valentine’s Day 2011 in Shanghai, when hairdresser Guan Wenxin is kidnapped by her former best friend, Dai Anni, over their shared love for Luo Jia. After a violent struggle, Wenxin escapes but is knocked unconscious, waking up three months later on a rainy road with amnesia. Staying with Luo Jia, Wenxin is plagued by horrific visions. Her confusion deepens when she meets Wu Guangming, an artist who claims he harbored her during her missing months. The mystery takes a dark turn when Anni’s decayed body is found in the sea near her greenhouse. At the funeral, Wenxin suddenly behaves as if possessed by Anni, claiming Anni was pregnant by Luo Jia and blaming herself for losing the baby. As her sanity slips, Wenxin becomes convinced that Anni’s vengeful ghost has taken over her body, leaving her caught in a terrifying psychological torment.
