Set during the final days of the Japanese occupation in Taiwan, Strawman is a drama presented in a quasi-comical style that follows the struggles of a poor village family. The Chan brothers, working as tenant farmers, face a devastatingly poor harvest. Burdened with supporting their deaf old mother, a mentally disordered sister widowed by the war, and a bunch of children, their daily survival is a constant battle against poverty. Their lives take an absurd turn when a heavy, unexploded bomb suddenly drops from the sky onto their farmland. Seeking to turn their misfortune into an opportunity, the brothers decide to present the bomb to the local Japanese police as a gift for the Emperor of Japan. However, the terrified authorities order them to throw it into the sea. This command leads to an unexpected miracle when the blast yields an abundance of fish, bringing a rare feast to their family.
