Description:

Set against the backdrop of Fengjie, a city undergoing self-deconstruction due to the massive Three Gorges Dam, Still Life weaves two poignant stories of search and displacement. The first follows Han Sanming, a coal miner from Shanxi, who returns to find his estranged wife, Missy Ma, and their daughter. Discovering his old neighborhood is already flooded, Sanming takes a local demolition job while waiting for her. He befriends Brother Mark and eventually reunites with Missy Ma, only to learn he must pay a heavy debt to free her. Meanwhile, the film follows Shen Hong, a nurse searching for her estranged husband, Guo Bin. Upon discovering his success and infidelity in Fengjie, she calmly demands a divorce. Through these parallel journeys of love, loss, and survival, Still Life captures the profound human cost of rapid modernization. Sanming ultimately decides to return to the dangerous Shanxi mines to save his wife, leaving the decaying city behind.
