Based on the manga by Takashi Murakami of Osaka, Star Watching Dog is a touching film adaptation that begins with a tragic discovery. An abandoned car near a campground contains the body of an unidentified middle-aged man and a dog who died months after him. The heart of the story unfolds from the perspective of Happy, a loyal dog who shares his life with his beloved owner, played by Toshiyuki Nishida, whom he calls father. Happy recounts his journey from a peaceful puppyhood through major life changes, leading to a long final road trip with his owner. Alongside this, the narrative follows caseworker Okutsu Kyousuke, played by Tetsuji Tamayama, in a second story titled Himawarisou. As Kyousuke investigates the tragic scene, the experience triggers deep memories of his own late family and the unwavering loyalty of his childhood dog. This emotional film beautifully explores the profound, unbreakable bond between humans and their canine companions.
