Shady Grove is a compelling romantic drama that explores the challenges of modern communication and self-identity. The story follows Fujio Rika, a bright young woman obsessed with marrying her ideal, wealthy executive boyfriend, Ono Seiichi. When Ono suddenly dumps her, Rika falls into a neurotic shock. Desperate and drunk, she begins making random cell phone calls until she connects with Kono Shingo, an insecure movie publicist. Unable to cope, Rika stalks Ono, threatens suicide, and hires a private investigator to shadow him. Meanwhile, Ono only reconsiders marrying her to secure a company promotion, revealing the deep self-centeredness of all three characters. As they struggle with their isolated, solipsistic lives, Rika and Kono find themselves drawn to Shady Grove, a dreamlike forest from Rika’s childhood. This enigmatic sanctuary becomes the ultimate space for them to confront how others perceive them, resolve their personal crises, and attempt to establish a genuine, human connection.
