Riding Alone For Thousands Of Miles is a touching drama about Takata, played by Takakura Ken, an aging Japanese fisherman seeking reconciliation. Estranged from his son for years, Takata is summoned to the hospital by his daughter-in-law, Rie, after his son is diagnosed with terminal cancer. Though his son refuses to see him, Rie gives Takata a videotape containing his son's unfinished documentary about the traditional Nuo opera in China's Yunnan province. In a desperate bid to understand and connect with his dying child, Takata embarks on a solitary journey to China to complete the film in his son's stead. The title of the movie beautifully mirrors the fabled tale of Guan Yu's perilous quest to reunite with Liu Bei from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
