Rampo Noir (2005)

Other name: 乱歩地獄 , Rampo jigoku

Description:

Rampo Noir is a chilling horror anthology directly inspired by the dark and twisted imagination of Edogawa Rampo, Japan's master of psychological suspense and a clear homage to Edgar Allan Poe. This film delves into the depths of human perversion and psychological terror through a series of disturbing tales.

The unsettling journey begins with "Mars Canal," a surreal framing device where acclaimed actor Asano Tadanobu, playing a naked man, collapses at the edge of a mysterious lake that seemingly descends into hell, effectively linking the subsequent narratives. The first main story, "Mirror Hell," sees a detective, also portrayed by Asano, investigating a trail of beautiful female corpses, leading him into the labyrinthine world of a deranged mirror maker.

Next, "The Caterpillar" portrays the horrifying domestic abuse faced by a limbless war veteran at the hands of his cruel wife. Finally, in "Crawling Bugs," a chauffeur, yet again played by Asano, becomes dangerously obsessed with his actress employer, revealing a profound descent into psychological fixation. This collection of unsettling, Poe-esque nightmares pushes the boundaries of horror, unified by Asano Tadanobu's versatile performances across distinct roles.
