In the haunting tale Peony Lantern Ghost Story, Shinzaburo flees an unwanted marriage with his brother's widow to start a new life. He lives quietly as a teacher, distanced from his family and the pressures of his past. However, everything changes on the night of the summer Obon festival when he meets a beautiful courtesan named Otsuyu. Shinzaburo is immediately captivated, completely unaware that she is actually a ghost. As they spend time together, these mysterious interactions begin leaving him dangerously weakened. Shinzaburo's curiosity turns to pure terror when he discovers that Otsuyu is accompanied by a much more obviously ghostly attendant. Realizing the deadly truth behind his beautiful companion, a frightened Shinzaburo visits Kiku, a temple priest, to seek an exorcism before it is too late.
