In the martial arts action film Once Upon a Time in Shanghai, Ma Yongzhen, played by Philip Ng, travels from his hometown to Shanghai to seek a livelihood, armed with unique martial arts skills possessed since childhood. In the bustling city, he meets the rising overlord Lung Chat, played by Andy On. Sharing the same dreams, the two youths quickly become close brothers after surviving various hardships together. Their partnership leads them to defeat numerous enemies and crush the dominant Axe Gang, earning them fame throughout Shanghai. During their rise, Ma also secures the support of retired kung fu master Iron Leader, played by Sammo Hung, to battle their common foes. However, the defeated Axe Gang refuses to back down. They launch a brutal surprise attack that leaves Lung dead. Unable to save his brother, a devastated Ma Yongzhen decides to embark on a path of vengeance.
