The movie Ninth Happiness follows Ma Lin Da as he travels to Rainbow Village to serve as an officer alongside his brothers, Lin Gu and Lin Chiang. Disgusted by his brothers greedy and dishonest ways, Lin Chiang abruptly leaves them. Upon arrival, Ma Lin Da discovers the local villagers are remarkably honest, self-restrained, and content. Seeking to exploit them, Ma Lin Da secretly plots to divide and manipulate the villagers for his own advantage. Meanwhile, in the forest, Lin Chiang meets Zhi Yun, the beautiful niece of Mrs. Minister, and the two instantly fall in love. To conceal his identity, Lin Chiang plays tricks on his brothers, unaware that Lin Gu already lusts after Zhi Yun. Eventually, the innocent residents of Rainbow Village fall into the trap set by the Lin brothers. The once-peaceful village quickly descends into selfishness, dishonesty, and hatred, leaving the formerly happy villagers feeling completely discontented.
