In the minimalist movie Megane, Taeko, a buttoned-up, bespectacled woman carrying a large suitcase, seeks an escape at a tiny seaside inn surrounded by a pristine white beach and a luminous turquoise sea. Hoping for solitude, Taeko is initially annoyed by the friendly intrusions of the inn's proprietor, Yuji, and Sakura, a placid older woman. After a farcical attempt to seek refuge at another hotel, Taeko sheepishly returns to her unconventional hosts. Gradually, she tunes into their simple community and begins to embrace their slow pace of life. Through preparing exquisite meals, practicing playful sand exercises, and engaging in twilighting—the simple act of staring into space—Taeko learns what Yuji calls the talent to be here. Megane is a soulful, quiet, and humorous journey that serves as a visual meditation, allowing viewers to relax, breathe deeply, and share in the characters peace.
