Hwang Jin Yi is a captivating drama that chronicles the legendary life of a famous sixteenth-century Joseon-era gisaeng, dancer, musician, and poet. Born as the illegitimate child of a nobleman and Heon Keum, a noted gisaeng musician, Hwang Jin Yi, played by Ha Ji Won, relentlessly pursues perfection in her art. She constantly struggles against the severe hardships imposed on women of lowly social status.

The story centers on her artistic journey and the four men in her life. Her tragic first love with Kim Eun Ho, played by Jang Geun Suk, ends in heartbreak. Later, her love affair with Kim Jung Han, portrayed by Kim Jae Won, also fails to find a happy ending. Meanwhile, Byuk Kye Soo, played by Yoo Tae Joon, is an obsessed relative of the Emperor who tries everything to possess her, while her devoted bodyguard Yi Saeng, played by Lee Shi Hwan, never deserts her.
