In the acclaimed drama Heremias, directed by Lav Diaz, Ronnie Lazaro stars as the titular character, a traveling craftsman who decides to separate from his fellow merchants. Soon after going his own way, a vicious hurricane strikes, leaving him stranded without his ox or any of his goods. As he wanders, Heremias meets various people, learning deeply about their diverse lives. However, the journey takes a dark turn when he overhears a group of drug-fueled teenagers planning to rape a young woman. Despite his desperate attempts to warn several people about the impending crime, nobody listens to him. In a last resort, Heremias reaches a solemn agreement with God, promising to go forty days without food if the girl remains unharmed. Serving as the first half of a compelling two-part story, this film explores faith, isolation, and moral duty.
