Happiness of the Katakuris is a dark comedy film loosely based on the South Korean film The Quiet Family. The story revolves around the Katakuris, a four-generation family of failures consisting of patriarch Masao Katakuri, his wife Terue, his father Jinpei, his formerly criminal son Masayuki, his divorced daughter Shizue, her child Yurie, and their dog Poochi. Seeking a fresh start, they use Masao's redundancy pay to open a bed and breakfast called the White Lovers Inn, located on a former garbage dump near Mount Fuji. They hope a planned road expansion will bring tourists, but the road is delayed, leaving them guestless. When their first guest, a TV personality sans clothes, tragically commits suicide during the night, the family panics. To protect their new business from ruin, the Katakuris make the desperate decision to bury the body and conceal the death, setting off a bizarre chain of events.
