An early connection forms with British teenager Staunton, who later, as an East India Company employee, investigates Wu Dunyuan over substandard English tea. During this challenge, Wu Dunyuan discovers the recipe for frying tea, yet is wrongfully imprisoned, leading to Yihe Hang's closure. To save him, Lao Tan uncovers a ledger exposing customs supervisor Ji Shan's corruption, which merchant's daughter Lier presents to the imperial court. Freed, Wu Dunyuan rebuilds Yihe Hang into an exceptionally successful hong, eventually becoming one of the world's wealthiest individuals. As the First Opium War erupts in 1840, Wu Dunyuan steadfastly defends his country, vowing that China will never again endure such humiliation.
