In the martial arts action film Drunken Master III, the White Lotus Sect convinces the Manchu emperor of China that a sacred jade ring guarantees his hold on the throne. Since he had already given the ring to his fiancée, Sum Yu, the emperor sends for her. However, rebel forces kidnap and wound Sum Yu, who eventually ends up in the care of Wong Keiying and his son, Wong Fei Hung. While on the run from the imperial army, they encounter Uncle Yan, a wine seller and kung fu expert who teaches Fei Hung essential martial arts stances. Disaster strikes when Sum Yu accidentally breaks the jade ring just as the emperor's troops catch up. To prevent Uncle Yan's shop from being burned down, Sum Yu willingly surrenders to the troops. Now facing an uncertain fate, Wong Fei Hung, his father, and Uncle Yan join forces to launch a dangerous rescue mission to save her.
