In the captivating mystery film Case of a Young Lord I, financial hardship forces Yamaoka Tatewaki, a Hatamoto, to pawn his invaluable heirloom Gosu plate for 100 ryo. When Yokogawa Dewa visits on the May 5th Boys Festival and requests to see the plate, panic ensues. Yamaoka attempts to borrow it back, but the coldhearted pawnbroker refuses, only to die mysteriously soon after. Following his death, two warehouses are burgled, but the thief leaves empty-handed. Perplexed by these bizarre events, Detective Shokichi recruits the brilliant Young lord samurai to crack the case. The Young lord immediately realizes the thief is after a highly specific treasure. He suspects the ultimate truth might be hidden inside the coffin of the deceased merchant, who was buried alongside his most valuable belongings.
