By a Man's Face is a gripping drama set across three distinct eras, focusing on the postwar tensions between Japanese and Zainichi Korean residents in 1948. The story begins eight years later, introducing Amamiya, a doctor who has just finished an eight-year prison sentence for murder. When a fatally injured man named Nakatani is brought to his hospital, Amamiya initially refuses to operate. However, recognizing the victim as Sai, a soldier who served under him in Okinawa as Shibata, he has a change of heart. Their history goes much deeper. During the postwar occupation, Amamiya acted as a landlord for a marketplace targeted by powerful Korean mobsters. While Amamiya initially avoided the conflict due to his wartime trauma, he is forced to take action when his hotheaded brother Shunji gets involved with Li Keishun, a young Japanese-born Korean girl. Drawn into the chaos, Amamiya can no longer remain a detached bystander.
