Set in militaristic 1930s Japan, the intense martial arts film Black Belt (KuruObi) follows three karate journeymen: Giryu, Taikan, and Choei. Training under Master Shibahara in a reclusive Kyushu dojo, their peaceful lives are disrupted when the military attempts to seize their dojo. The peace-loving Giryu easily defeats military commander Tanahara in a duel, leading to the commander's seppuku and his family's quest for revenge. To end the violence, Giryu allows himself to be stabbed, sustaining near-mortal wounds. Meanwhile, Taikan submits to the military and becomes an army instructor. As Taikan spirals into aggression and brutality, his hunger for stronger opponents sets up a tragic conflict. This martial arts movie balances realistic action with deep karate philosophy. Ultimately, the corrupted Taikan and the recovering Giryu, who must learn to fight again, are headed toward an inevitable, high-stakes showdown.
