In the classic film Audition, lonely middle-class TV producer Aoyama Shigeharu, played by Ryo Ishibashi, lives with his teenage son Shigehiko, played by Tetsu Sawaki. To cure Aoyama of his loneliness, his friend and movie producer Yoshikawa, played by Jun Kunimura, suggests a bizarre plan: holding a phony movie audition to find a potential new wife. The clueless Shigeharu eagerly agrees to the scheme. Together, they conduct interviews filled with intrusive questions about sex that have very little to do with acting. Aoyama eventually becomes captivated by Asami, played by ex-model Eihi Shiina, a tall and otherworldly young woman. While Aoyama is completely smitten, the more seasoned Yoshikawa senses that something is deeply wrong with her. He decides to investigate her past, quickly uncovering numerous holes in her story. This gripping plot makes Audition a dark and unforgettable thriller that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats.
