Atsu Hime is an epic historical drama depicting the extraordinary life of Okatsu, who is born in 1835 in Kagoshima Prefecture, then known as Satsuma. Raised by her parents, Shimazu Tadatake and Oyuki, Okatsu grows up as a warmhearted tomboy. Her strong sense of justice is revealed early on when she confronts chief retainer Zusho over her father’s punishment. Eventually adopting the name Atsuhime, she marries Tokugawa Iesada, the 13th shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate, and ascends to the highest rank within Ooku in Edo castle. Following her husband's sudden death, the young widow takes the name Tenshoin at age twenty-three. As the nation enters the chaotic Meiji Restoration led by forces from Satsuma, Tenshoin must make difficult choices. She passionately exerts herself to protect the Tokugawa clan and safeguard the nation during a time of immense political upheaval.
