Description:

In the poignant drama Aki tachinu, a widowed single mother moves from the countryside to Tokyo with her sixth-grade son. To support them, she works at a local inn while leaving her boy to live with his uncle's family, who run a struggling greengrocer. Adjusting to city life, the boy faces bullying and fights but finds comfort in basketball, bathhouse visits, and the companionship of his male cousin. He also befriends a lonely fourth-grade girl, the daughter of the innkeeper and her wealthy businessman lover. When the boy's mother abruptly abandons her job for a new life with an inn client, the two children find solace in each other. After a misadventure at the seaside leads to trouble with the police, the boy tries to help his young friend with a school project by searching for a lost beetle. However, family pressures force the girl to move away, leaving him to face the bittersweet realities of growing up.
