In the poignant film Air Doll, middle-aged Hideo lives a solitary life with Nozomi, an inflatable doll who serves as his closest companion. He talks to her, dresses her up, and shares intimate moments with her. However, unbeknown to Hideo, Nozomi is created with a heart. Every day after Hideo leaves for work, Nozomi dresses in her maid outfit to explore the world outside their apartment with childlike wonder. During her wanderings, she encounters various city residents who, metaphorically, are just as empty inside as she is. Her journey takes a romantic turn when she meets Junichi at a local video store. Falling in love, Nozomi takes a part-time job there, learning about life through movies. But her happiness is suddenly interrupted by a dramatic turn of events. Directed by Koreeda, Air Doll is a touching exploration of urban loneliness and the profound question of what it means to be human.
