In the psychological drama A drowning man (Oboreru hito), Tokio Shinya Tsukamoto is a young salaryman whose life takes a dark, surreal turn. One night, he is confronted with his own ineptness when he discovers his wife, Kumiko, has drowned in the bathtub. Frozen in shock, Tokio picks up the phone to call for help but hesitates, ultimately putting it down without dialing. Instead, in a state of bizarre distraction, he makes himself coffee, drains the bath, and moves Kumiko to the living room couch. Sitting beside her lifeless body, overwhelming panic sets in, prompting him to drink heavily until he passes out. The next morning, Tokio wakes up in his own bed, disoriented.
