The emotional drama 1 Litre of Tears follows the life of fifteen-year-old Aya Ikeuchi. Aya is an ordinary girl, the daughter of a family who works at a tofu shop and a soon-to-be high schooler. However, odd things have been happening to Aya lately, as she begins falling down often and walking strange. Concerned for her daughter, her mother Shioka takes Aya to see a doctor. The medical diagnosis is devastating. Aya has spinocerebellar degeneration, a cruel disease where the cerebellum of the brain gradually deteriorates. Eventually, the victim cannot walk, speak, write, or eat, though the disease does not affect the mind in the least. How will Aya react when told about her incurable illness? How will Aya live from now on? This moving story portrays her struggle, courage, and determination to make the most of her life.
